TAFE Queensland and the Queensland Government.

About the project

In 2019, IM won a nationally competitive tender to deliver small business training to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Queensland. This initial project has developed into a long-term program that supports the growth of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander entrepreneur sector, from business initiation through to growth. At its core, One Business is focused on building economic participation and a sustainable business ecosystem owned and led by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander entrepreneurs.

The challenge

With many entrepreneurs located regionally or remotely, access to training resources, business support, networks, and markets is a key challenge to building and sustaining successful businesses. Through long-term programming that provides practical learning and opportunities, mentorship, marketing events, and ecosystem networking, One Business aims to foster business collaboration, build resilience, and increase the visibility of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses to the broader buyer market.

The solution

Since its inception, IM has adopted a capacity-building partnership approach to the development and delivery of this program, including a train-the-trainer program that works with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander business owners to equip them as One Business trainers. Our amazing cohort of trainers facilitates face-to-face and online delivery across regional and remote locations. IM’s in-house learning designers regularly review and update the training resources to ensure accurate and robust information, enabling the IM team to continue delivering appropriate services through a multi-modal and culturally safe approach. The program offers a hybrid delivery with in-person learning and regular online Lunch and Learn sessions and mentoring. IM aims to provide an accessible and inclusive business community for all participants.

The results

One Business has demonstrated growth in the sector, increasing the visibility of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander entrepreneurs, innovators, and owners of micro, small, and medium-sized businesses.
One Business is about growing self-determined futures, fostering independent communities, and reducing social and economic disparities that stem from a healthy, resilient Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander business sector.
